Topic Overview: 

This highly interactive session based on Will’s latest book “Actualized Teamwork: Unlocking the Culture Code for Optimal Performance” will engage participants in a self-discovery session that includes a short, free online assessment to determine their leadership style and shadow. Participants will gain greater awareness and understanding of what is likely to trigger their “shadow,” what impact it has on others, and strategies for managing this component of their professional lives. Special emphasis will be placed on navigating leadership shadows in professional training and development settings.

Bio: 

Dr. William L. Sparks

TED Speaker / Amazon #1 Best Selling Author / Award-Winning Teacher and Researcher

Will Sparks is the Dennis Thompson Chair & Professor of Leadership at the McColl School of Business at Queens University of Charlotte, where he also serves as the Director of the Office of Leadership Initiatives. In 2008, he founded the McColl School’s M.S. in Organization Development (MSOD) Program and served as Director until 2013.  He received the Fuqua Distinguished Educator Award for excellence in teaching at Queens in 2003 and 2005, and was awarded the inaugural McColl School Leadership in Teaching Award in 2009. He was awarded both the McColl School Leadership in Teaching and Research Awards in 2020.

While on sabbatical from Queens in 2015-2016 he served as Global Vice President of Talent with EnPro Industries, a $3B global manufacturing company headquartered in Charlotte, NC.  In this role he was responsible for corporate leadership and talent management initiatives. 

Will serves as the Managing Director for William L. Sparks & Associates, LLC, a professional services firm founded in 1997 focused on leader and team development, executive coaching and change management. He also serves as a Partner with Peter Browning Partners, LLC, a consulting firm providing board governance services. In 2023 he founded The Center for Human and Organizational Potential, a 501c3 not-for-profit research and educational organization focused on human performance and flourishing. 

Will has published numerous research papers and book chapters and has appeared on several media outlets, including The Washington Post, Inc., and NPR. His TED Talk “The Power of Self Awareness” was released in 2018. He is the author of “Actualized Leadership: Meeting Your Shadow & Maximizing Your Potential” (2019, SHRM Publishing), which debuted as an Amazon #1 Best Seller and is based on the “Actualized Leader Profile,” a leadership assessment that he designed and validated and that has been translated into nine languages. He is the co-author (with Peter Browning) of the book “The Director’s Manual: A Framework for Board Governance” (2016, Wiley). He is the author of the forthcoming book “Actualized Teamwork” (SHRM Publishing, 2024). 

He completed his Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior and Development under the direction of Dr. Jerry B. Harvey from The George Washington University’s School of Business and Public Management, where his research focused on group dynamics, organizational culture, and leadership. He resides in Charlotte, North Carolina with his wife Erin, son Bennett Lee and Cavapoo Shelby.

    Parking (Free):

    Utilize parking deck on right/east side between Mal-Pan and Tou Les Jour and is labeled East Deck Parking Entrance

    Park anywhere starting on the 3rd floor and up. 

    Use elevators in the corner nearest Two Piedmont Town Center (south end).

    Cross at street level to get to Two Piedmont Town Center building.

    Parking is FREE.


    Meeting Space:

    Amwins is located in the Two Piedmont Town Center (right/east) building.

    Amwins name is listed on the marque in front of the building.

    Entrance is the double doors to the left of Del-Frisco’s steakhouse.  

    Once you have entered the building's lobby, go up to the 8th floor where you will see Amwins on the door.

    ATD Charlotte chapter meetings will be held in the Amwins Training Room located directly behind the break area with a large island at entrance.



    Registration:  5-6pm

    Meeting start time:  5:45pm

    Note:  for any guests attending (without a guest pass), please select 'Guest-In Person' for your registration; the cost is $20 to cover the meeting and food.

    We are looking forward to seeing you! Remember that in order to protect food costs and your membership dollars ATD charges a $20 no-show fee. So if something comes up please cancel by Monday 12noon before the meeting. Thanks!!!
