IN PERSON:
Session Description:
Strategic Listening Techniques to Improve Our Conversation Outcomes
ATD Capabilities:
Personal: Communication
Personal: EI and Decision Making
Organizational: Consulting and Business Partnering
Topic Overview:
Leaders typically reflect on their conversations when the outcomes don’t match their expectations and think, “What did I miss?” Often, they were presented with many indications of what their counterparts were truly thinking and feeling they weren’t observing carefully enough to take advantage of them. Common distractions, including assumptions, expectations, internal monologues, and time restrictions, make it difficult for leaders to capture the strategic value embedded in the communications they observe. Leaders who learn to systematically focus on the nuances of what they see and hear within their conversations consistently identify unexpected opportunities to obtain the truth, resolve issues, and make the best decisions for their organizations.
At the conclusion of this session, all attendees will possess new skills, perspectives, and techniques, including how to:
-
Leverage the seven stages of contentious conversations
-
Limit the negative impact of their biases, assumptions, and expectations
-
Reframe their preparations to create unexpected opportunities to obtain the truth
-
Overcome common listening mistakes
-
Employ techniques to evolve their listening mindsets
-
Encourage their audiences to save face while sharing sensitive information
-
Apply the favored observation and persuasion skills of Certified Forensic Interviewers
-
Execute the seven core behaviors of the Disciplined Listening Method
Value to Attendees: All attendees will walk away with the proven skills, perspectives, and techniques necessary to unlock hidden value in their conversations and consistently influence people to share sensitive information under vulnerable circumstances and in the face of consequences.
