ATD Charlotte Chapter Meeting
Zoom Meeting: April 20, 2023 6:00pm - 8:00pm (Eastern)
Our Learner Surveys Can Be More Powerful and Effective Than We Think!
As learning professionals, we regularly use learner surveys, but many of us don’t trust them. That is our intuition telling us something already proven by research! Traditional smile sheets do not correlate with results. Fortunately, there is a much more effective way!
In this session, Will Thalheimer, award-winning author and tireless researcher, will share hard-earned lessons learned about designing and utilizing better learner surveys. We will discuss:
- the science behind traditional learner surveys,
- the problems inherent with Likert and numeric scales,
- the innate challenges associated with learners evaluating learning,
- how to build better questions,
- how to send messages and nudge action, and
- how learner surveys fit into a new model - LTEM (the Learning-Transfer Evaluation Model) developed by Will.
Will's content will assure you if you’re skeptical about surveying learners. If you’re using Likert-like scales or numeric scales, Will’s research-inspired approach will challenge you. One of the best things about Will’s work is that he’s skeptical too, and he’s built an approach that can provide us with better data while also reminding us to use learner surveys only as a starting point in evaluation. Agents of change within organizations won’t miss this opportunity to continue their journey and drastically improve the learning evaluation function within their organizations.
The learning industry recognizes his LTEM approach as an innovative model that provides learning teams with better data.
Will Thalheimer, Ph.D., MBA, is the Principal at TiER1 Performance.
